Whitney Parker Mitchell's work stood out because AI was not treated as an isolated productivity initiative. It became part of a broader enterprise strategy for creating operating leverage and new sources of value. Arizent's Media Sales and Proposal Agent saves approximately four hours per sales representative per week, redirecting an estimated 2,400 hours of capacity annually toward customer relationships and higher-value commercial work.

During the same period, the media business moved to approximately 9% year-over-year growth. The transformation also created something new. A Market Intelligence offering built around Arizent's proprietary data has generated more than $400,000 in annual recurring revenue, establishing a new commercial model around intelligence and benchmarking. That combination of productivity, growth and new revenue made the work especially compelling.

The technology matters. What the business can now do because of it matters more.

AI experimentation is easy to start. Enterprise transformation is much harder. The Vanguard Award for Data & AI Leadership recognizes leaders who turned data or AI into a capability the organization could actually use: to make better decisions, reduce cost, create new revenue, improve customer value, increase speed or change the way work gets done.

The strongest entries moved beyond tools and pilots. They demonstrated adoption, governance, trust, business impact and a credible path to scale.

Applying agentic AI to mission-critical data operations at scale.

  • 60%Reduction in SDS obtainment cost
  • $2.1MAnnualized savings
  • 20MDocument library

Amy Gleason led the application of agentic AI to work that had historically depended on transactional vendor capacity and manual processing. The result was a dramatic reduction in the cost of SDS obtainment. Annual costs fell from approximately $3.5 million to a $1.4 million run rate, representing approximately 60% cost reduction and $2.1 million in annualized savings.

At the same time, 3E introduced an Error-Free Guarantee across a library of approximately 20 million documents serving 5,000 customers. The significance is larger than automation. Gleason demonstrated how AI can be introduced into a mission-critical information operation while increasing efficiency and preserving the quality customers depend on.

Rebuilding an AI strategy after being willing to admit the first one did not work.

  • £527KAnnual software run-rate removed
  • 51.5% → 0%Dormant AI licenses
  • 45 of 45Provisioned leaders actively using the new capability

Sharon Roessen's work is a case study in what serious AI transformation looks like when leadership is willing to measure adoption honestly. Terrapinn's initial AI rollout produced a troubling result: 51.5% of issued AI licenses were dormant. Rather than declare victory and continue the rollout, Roessen commissioned the audit, published the failure internally and rebuilt the company's approach around named use cases, focused training and leadership accountability.

By August 2026, all 45 provisioned Claude seats were active, including every managing director, general manager and functional head across five offices. The broader transformation also removed major software costs. Between May and August 2026, Terrapinn reduced annual software run-rate by approximately £527,000 across four enterprise platforms. The replacement capability runs on roughly £20,000 annually and was built in-house without an agency, consultant or systems integrator. This is what transformation looks like when adoption, economics and organizational behavior are treated as one problem.

Enterprise transformation, not another isolated automation project.

  • $9M+Annualized savings and operating efficiencies

Aditi Sinha led a transformation spanning data architecture, operational workflows and client delivery. The work combined data re-architecture, automation of major business processes and redesign of the client-delivery interface. Together, those changes produced more than $9 million in annualized savings and operating efficiencies.

What distinguished the work was its breadth. Rather than apply AI or automation to a single point solution, Sinha addressed the underlying architecture and workflows required for a larger transformation of how the organization operates and delivers value to customers.

Bringing practical AI to an industry that rarely has dedicated technology resources.

  • 37 miles/weekRemoved from a live route
  • ~1,900 miles/yearEstimated reduction on one vehicle
  • 40 yearsOf experience converted into documented operating knowledge

Dawn Hargrove-Avery created SmartCare OS to apply AI to the operating realities of independent garment-care businesses. One early deployment focused on a live 137-stop delivery route that had been planned for years based primarily on owner experience. Using the SmartCare Route Optimizer, the business removed 37 miles per week from the route, approximately 1,900 miles annually on a single vehicle. The owner personally drove and verified the optimized route before adopting it.

Hargrove-Avery also used AI to address another deeply human problem: institutional knowledge trapped inside the head of a longtime owner. Through spoken explanation, AI helped convert decades of experience into written SOPs and training materials that could be reviewed, approved, taught and transferred.

The work demonstrated what practical AI can mean for smaller businesses: lower cost, increased capacity, reduced owner dependency and a foundation for succession.

Building a first-party data and agentic revenue strategy for the zero-click era.

  • Up to 78%Reduction in campaign trafficking time

Stephanie Mazzamaro's work addressed one of digital media's most consequential challenges: how publishers create value as referral traffic declines and first-party audience intelligence becomes more important. Through the Encore initiative, first-party audiences packaged through a curation desk generated approximately 1.5 times open-market CPMs, representing a roughly 50% price premium.

The model also introduced agentic direct selling. Campaign trafficking that previously required two to three days of manual work was reduced to under six hours, an improvement of as much as 78%. The strategy was significant because it connected data governance, AI-enabled workflows and monetization on one foundation, supporting on-site commerce, curation and agentic selling while reducing dependency on third-party data.

Under Adelaide Reilly's leadership, The Channel Company built an enterprise AI strategy spanning adoption, workflow automation, data modernization, governance and product development. Client onboarding time fell from approximately three months to three weeks, a roughly 75% reduction.

Campaign strategy and asset-development timelines that previously took several weeks were reduced to approximately two days. Equally significant was organizational adoption. The company reported 100% AI adoption, with every employee actively using AI at least three times per week. Reilly also established an enterprise AI task force, responsible AI policies and an evaluation process spanning more than 25 technologies. Her work demonstrated that AI transformation is not ultimately a software deployment. It is an operating model.
